TOMOKO KONOIKE
Born in 1960 in Akita, Japan. Graduated from Department of Japanese Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. Konoike has been exploring the boundary of humans and contemporary myths using her own creations of paintings and sculptures since 1988 after working as a toy designer. Konoike has been challenging the conventional form of art which only deals with thoughts and phenomenon of humans and proactively proceeding projects engaging anthropology, fairy tale research, pedagogical anthropology, and archaeology.
Major solo exhibitions include “Chapter #0” (2006, Ohara Museum of Art, Okayama), “Inter-Traveller” (2009, Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery / Kirishima Open Air Museum), “Primordial Violence” (2015, Kanagawa Kenmin Hall / 2016, The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma and The Niigata Badaijima Art Museum) and group exhibitions include Guangzhou Triennale (2008, China), Busan Biennale (2010, Busan Museum of Art Station , South Korea), “Nous” (2016, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa), and “Temporal Turn” (2016, Spencer Museum of Art, USA). The most recent publication “Animal Word” has been published from Hatori Press, Inc in 2016.
